Why We Created The Daily Influence

Last week, we launched a custom RSS dashboard in partnership with Netvibes. It’s a simple idea really - take the flexible, widget-based structure of the worlds greatest RSS start page, Netvibes, and tune it up with all the right feeds and widgets to make it useful for most marketers and communications specialists.

You can grab it here at TheDailyInfluence.com.

We did it for our staff first. Turns out brands are adopting it as well. We put a lot of energy into training. From Digital Influence 101 (social media-based word of mouth marketing) to Ninja-level programs. We are building capacity everywhere and have been doing so for years.

One thing we have learned is that social media cannot be completely grokked by observing. For today’s marcomm person, you must practice it in your life to better understand how to apply it to your business. The simplest act beyond tending to your Facebook or Linked-in pages or even starting to Twitter or create an industry blog, is to adopt a new heads-up display of the 100-200 feeds that will help you be as sharp as possible and incent you to jump in the pool (yes, the water is fine).

Your Dashboard, Our Universe
The Daily Influence collects hundreds of feeds in an ever-growing set of tabs. Today we have everything from Social Media/WOMM tabs to Trends, PR, Advertising and Video (on the Web). We have also added a collection of widgets that will help you set up a crude “Listening Post-lite” where you can get a quick scan of what folks are saying about a brand or issue out there. This is not as sophisticated as the Radian6-powered Listening Posts that we use to create our Conversation Maps and Live Listening Posts but it is a great personal tool.

Grab it now. You can add or subtract any and all of the feeds. You can completely customize it as you see fit. If you want to create a new “tab” collection and feel like sharing, just make it and send us the tab through Netvibes sharing function (or email). We will have Public Affairs tabs soon, Social Marketing and lots more.

If you are trying to encourage your staff to know more about social media and even to start applying it to their jobs, then you have to help them get their feet wet. Simple tools like The Daily Influence can help.

Good move on Ogilvy’s part, John, in terms of getting everyone to jump into the pool. I like the observation you make that there is an personal learning (and practicing) process that is important before one can apply it to a business. Like the pool, no one believes the water is fine until they jump in themselves and experience it firsthand.

Thanks for mentioning your Radian6-powered Listening Posts. We really appreciate the partnership we have with you and enjoy your thought leadership in the space as well.

    Regards,
    Marcel

Excellent selection of feeds. I fully agree with what you said regarding that you have to practice it before you understand it. By actually engaging I’ll think you’ll make a smoother transition from a maybe more traditional Push mentality to a Pull.

Nice work! I like some of the tab ideas and content.

We’re constantly teaching clients and internal team members the benefits of using Netvibes (or igoogle or any other similar product) to stay on top of what’s happening.

Actually finding and adding that content seems to be a stumbling block for some. So publishing a public version with the tabs and content ready to go is a great way to overcome that initial hurdle.

Love it! We are always trying to impress upon our small business clients that listening isn’t just for the agency and the marketing team, but critical for the entire company if they want to remain competitive.

TheDailyInfluence looks like an easy to navigate, fun interface that may ease the way for those who may be overwhelmed by the prospect of social media listening.

Thanks for the continued great work, it’s making our job easier!
